Implant-Supported Dentures Restore Dental Function and Bone Health

While conventional dentures repair the form and function of your smile, they do not address bone degeneration, which is common following tooth loss. Implant-supported dentures can restore the integrity of your smile and preserve your oral health. These restorations attach to dental implants, which provide an incredibly secure base for dentures while also preserving the jawbone. Some patients may qualify for the All-on-4® technique, which enables the doctor to secure dentures using only four strategically placed implant posts. Dr. Len Gerken advises his patients about all kinds of advanced implant dentistry at his Oro Valley, AZ practice.

Implant-Supported vs. Traditional Dentures

When considering which tooth replacement solution is best for your needs, it is important to understand the differences between the types of dentures we offer. If cost is your primary concern, you may be better suited to traditional dentures. These are removable appliances and rely on suction, adhesives, or metal clasps to stay in place. Treatment does not require extensive surgery or an extended recovery period.

Illustration of traditional vs. implant-supported denture
Unlike traditional dentures, which can shift out of place, implant-supported restorations remain firmly secured to the jaw.

While implant-supported dentures are generally a more expensive option, they are a long-term investment in your oral health. These restorations can provide a lifetime of benefits, including:

Improved Function
Dental implants create a strong, permanent foundation for restorations, so your denture will never slip out of place when you speak or eat.
No Dietary Restrictions
Because these dentures remain fixed in place, you will not have to alter your diet to accommodate your new smile.
Better Oral Health
Implant-supported dentures prevent bone atrophy. The implant posts act as artificial tooth roots and stimulate the jawbone, preventing further bone loss. This, in turn, helps patients avoid an aged or sunken look.
Increased Comfort
Ill-fitting traditional dentures can damage soft tissue. Implant-supported dentures are affixed to implant posts and sit snugly against the gums, creating a comfortable and long-lasting alternative.

We believe everyone deserves to receive the highest level of care, which is why we accept CareCredit® financing to cover out-of-pocket costs for patients.

Evaluating Patients' Candidacy

Dr. Gerken provides comprehensive implant care at his practice, from prerequisite bone grafts to placing dental implants and restorations. When you arrive for your consultation at Oro Valley Smiles, we will begin by performing an exam and taking digital x-rays to assess the health of your jawbone and any remaining teeth. We can then create a precisely customized treatment plan.

Patients with any underlying health concerns such as gum disease or tooth decay must first undergo preliminary treatment. If you have suffered jawbone recession after tooth loss, Dr. Gerken may recommend a bone graft to augment your jaw and renew your eligibility for dental implants treatment.

Your Treatment Timeline

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone. Generally, six to eight titanium posts are required to support a full arch of prosthetic teeth. In select cases, we may be able to place just four implant posts to successfully repair your smile. This advanced method, known as the All-on-4 technique, can help some patients avoid a bone graft by maximizing available tissue.

Dr. Gerken provides comprehensive implant care at his practice, from preliminary bone grafts to implant surgery and restoration.

After implant placement, a temporary denture will typically be immediately attached. The treatment site will be left to heal, which takes anywhere from four to six months. During this time, the posts will fuse with the jaw in a process called osseointegration, becoming a permanent part of your anatomy. After this period is complete, you can return to the office to receive your permanent denture.

The majority of our restorations are fabricated by a local laboratory in Phoenix that uses only the most advanced materials, including zirconia. As a result, our patients enjoy natural-looking restorations that can last for years with proper care.
